Welcome to the Academic Advising in ECE website! As the undergraduate advisor, my job is to assist you in the pursuit of your degree. As such, I am here to answer questions you may have, provide support and help you complete necessary paperwork. I can assist you if you are interested in pursuing the Accelerated BS/MS degree option. I am also available to help you determine what to do when you are not as successful as you wish. I am available daily from 8:00 to 4:30 in Rm. 143 of the Emerson Electric Company Hall (EECH).

Help with Class Mastery
- Attend all classes and labs
- If you have an issue or emergency, notify your professor or instructor as soon as possible! They can’t help you if they don’t know anything is wrong!
- Follow your schedule and set up times dedicated to study, recreation, meals and sleeping! If you have a job, plan accordingly and block out times for all the activities previously listed!
- When you attend lectures, find time soon after class to review your notes! Look for understanding of the lecture topic, any mistakes you made while creating the notes and examples. If you have strong recall and understanding, great, you can stop there for now.
- If you feel that you don’t have a grasp of the lecture it is time to go the professor’s office hours. There you can ask for clarification of points you didn’t understand. Don’t put this off! The sooner you go the sooner you will understand!
- Other helpful locations are LEAD Sessions https://lead.mst.edu/schedule/ or Open Lab for IEEE/HKN in Room 202, EECH.
Self Help
Another way to help build your understanding of course work is to set up a study group! Study groups are a group of students you choose to work together to learn course concepts, homework and labs. You should have no more than 6 in the group. If the group is too large, it is hard to complete work as there is too much visiting versus working. Study groups usually meet in the evening close to when the homework is assigned. You can ask to set up meetings in EECH classrooms by asking me to reserve a room. A way to complete the work is to have pairs work on each problem. If you are having difficulty solving the problem, present what you have to the group. Examine the other students’ approach to the problem. Continue until the homework is complete. Follow a similar approach to labs and studying for tests.
Remember the rule of thumb for studying is “For every hour in class, spend 2 – 3 out of class.” Not all classes will require that much time, but some may require more. It is imperative to complete all assignments, labs and tests.
