Frequently Asked Questions
Below are some of the questions that we frequently get asked by prospective members. Click a question to expand the answer. If you have a question not on this list, please send us an email, and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.
When/how often do you meet?
We have weekly subteam meetings set by the respective leadership. There are also biweekly general body meetings on Wednesdays at 7:00pm in Computer Science Room 222.
What is the time commitment?
We are very flexible. We understand needing to skip a meeting to study for a test or go to an intramural sports game. You can spend just an hour or two a week on a subteam and still get something out of your experience. On the opposite end, there’s also an opportunity to dive in whole-heartedly and spend as much time as you please working on multiple subteams and hanging out in our tight-knit community.
What if I don’t know anything about robots?
That’s OK! None of us did when we joined. The design center gives you professional training on shop tools and machinery and our team expands on that training helping you get comfortable working on and understanding robots.
When is your competition season?
Competitions can be any time of the year, but we typically compete in the spring. Our design, manufacture, and business units work year-round to make that happen!
How big is the team?
It changes from year to year, but our typical core group of active members is approximately 30.
What size robots do you build?
Our past robots have been 12-30 pounds. Even in that small of a package, they pack quite a punch! This year we plan to compete in the 15-lb weight class with 3 robots this year.
Does it cost money to join the team?
We charge $20 dues to be an active member of the team. This charge directly funds your annual robot T-shirt. Other fun team apparel is available at market price but is not necessary to be on the team.
What kind of software do you use?
Our CAD team currently utilizes Onshape. Even if you have experience in a different software, it’s easy to learn and similar to the other major CAD suites.
What awards have you won?
In our inaugural competing season (2021) we won the following awards:
- Norwalk Havoc Robotics League
- 4th Place – 12lb Division
- 4th Place – 30lb Division
- BotsKC
- 3rd Place – Robot Battles
