Digital accessibility and course content
Digital accessibility is the practice of designing and developing electronic materials that are usable to everyone, including those with disabilities. Content impacted by the updated ADA Title II regulations for digital accessibility includes digital course content (such as Canvas, tools used within Canvas and files uploaded to Canvas), websites, mobile applications, vended applications, email, and other electronic documents.
Some ways to help ensure course content is accessible include:
- Follow general best practices like using descriptive links, clear heading structure, alt text for images, and high contrast colors.
- Integrate accessibility into your course design and content from the beginning.
- Maintain a consistent layout and formatting throughout your course.
- Provide captions and transcripts for all videos and audio content.
- Minimize the use of PDFs.
- Limit the paths to assignments and resources to streamline navigation in Canvas.
- Confirm that course materials provided by textbook publishers are accessible.
