Biography

Kate Drowne, professor of English, has been at Missouri S&T since 2000. Her research focuses on the literature of the 1920s, especially the representations of women and African-Americans in the “Jazz Age,” and she has taught courses on the American novel and the American short story, along with literature surveys and composition courses. In addition to her faculty role, has served S&T in a variety of other capacities, including as Director of the Writing Center (2001-2014); Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs in the College of Arts, Sciences, and Business (2014-2019); Director of the Center for Science, Technology, and Society (2017-2019); and Interim Dean of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Business (2019-2022). Since 2022 she has served as Assistant Provost for Faculty Affairs and co-PI on S&T’s NSF-funded ADVANCE grant, an initiative intended to increase equity and inclusion on campus and increase the representation and success of women in STEM disciplines.

Selected Responsibilities

Coordinate professional development activities for faculty, including the New Faculty Welcome, orientation events, and the year-long Early Career Faculty Development series

Coordinate faculty award processes, including the campus faculty awards, Class of ’42 Teaching Award, the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, Woman of the Year, Women’s Advocate of the Year, and others.

Assist with ADVANCE Program initiatives, including search committee training, leadership development workshops, ADVANCE faculty fellows and department enhancement grant programs, and a distinguished lecture series.

Serve as campus lead on the COACHE faculty workplace satisfaction survey

Perform other duties to serve S&T faculty, as needed.
