Program Note:
MIDNIGHT OILÂ comes from the phrase “Burn the midnight oil,” which means to work late into the night. The title reflects both the process of composition and the process which governs the piece. Just like I burned the midnight oil while composing the piece, the piece burns its own oil in the form of the musical materials it utilizes. The piece works its way through several motives before finally flickering out like a dying flame.
