Course Information

Music 1150 Music Appreciation, 3 credit hours

In this course, students will obtain an understanding of the history and development of music along with major composers and works through listening, discussion, and assignments. The course goal for students is to become better listeners, to speak and write about music using appropriate terminology, and to be exposed to music of different time periods, genres, and styles.

Music 1151 Music of Latin America, 3 credit hours

Students will obtain an understanding of the history and development of Latin American music along with its influence on music in the United States; this will be achieved through listening, discussion, and assignments. Students will become better listeners and speak or write about music using appropriate terminology.

Music 2161 Music Theory I, 3 credit hours

Starting with notation and ending with a working knowledge of keys, scales, harmony, and form, this course will cover in detail terminology and an understanding of reading music.

Music 2162 Music Theory II, 3 credit hours

Music 2162 is a continuation of Music 2161 with an emphasis on analysis, modern harmony, and form. The semester concludes with students writing a piece of music and performing it for the class.

Music 1141 Chamber Choir, 1 credit hour

Following the successful completion of this course, students will be able to read their vocal line, sing their part correctly with proper diction and intonation, and perform live for the public on concerts as outlined in the course syllabus. Music studied is varied in style, difficulty, and language. Students are able to take this course multiple times; the material worked on changes for each semester. Auditions are required and are held during class meeting times the first week of classes. The auditions are closed (not public) and consist of a warm up to check range, sightreading, and the performance of a solo of the singer’s choice OR the melody only of the “Star Spangled Banner.”

Music 1144 Jazz Choir, 1 credit hour

Students in this course will be able to read their vocal line, sing their part correctly with proper diction and intonation, and perform live for the public on concerts as outlined in the course syllabus. Music to be studied includes jazz standards along with new music. Students are able to take this course multiple times; the material worked on changes for each semester. No audition required.
