Missouri S&T’s Zine Lab is hosting its first-ever community event—Hack the Binary Zinethon—and you’re invited!

This is an afternoon for creativity, connection, and exploring how zines can help us think differently about gender and technology. You’ll have the opportunity to make your own gender realization zine, collaborate with others, and reflect on how identity and tech intersect in everyday life. Artist Alain McAlister will lead a zine-making station, and Steenz, President of SLICE, will offer one-on-one creative consultations. All supplies will be provided—just bring yourself!

The event is open to anyone 18 or older who lives in or engages with the local community. No zine-making experience required.

At this event, a separate research study led by Dr. Ryan Cheek and Dr. Carleigh Davis at Missouri S&T is being conducted. The study explores how zine-making might serve as a tool for engaging communities in conversations about public interest technology (PIT) and technological inequities. Participation in the research is completely optional and not required to take part in the workshop.

The study is purely observational—we will not collect any personally identifiable information. If you’d like to participate, you’ll have the option to scan a QR code and provide anonymous, open-ended feedback about your experience. Your responses will be used to inform the research and help us improve future events. This study has been approved by the University of Missouri IRB (Project #2126025).

When: April 26, 1–4 PM
Where: Humanities & Social Sciences Building, Missouri S&T, Rolla, MO
