Pre-Health
Welcome to the Pre-Health page for students at Missouri S&T. We provide comprehensive advising and resources to guide you through every step of preparing for a rewarding career in healthcare.
Missouri S&T students have been very successful in gaining admission to professional programs including medical, veterinary, physician assistant and dental schools.
The pre-health pathway does not require a specific major but does involve substantial coursework including:
- Chemistry: One year of organic chemistry is required.
- Biology: One to one and a half years, with a strong foundation in anatomy, biochemistry, and physiology highly recommended.
- Physics: One year.
Pre-health students are encouraged to take elective courses in areas like philosophy, psychology, and history to broaden their academic foundation. Additionally, experiential learning is crucial for success. Students should actively engage in activities such as volunteering, accumulating patient contact hours, and developing leadership skills.
The S&T Experience
Pre-health students at Missouri S&T have numerous opportunities to enhance their preparation for professional school admissions. They can participate in design teams, undergraduate research, or Joe’s PEERS . Students can join Scrubs, our pre-health student organization, and gain valuable experience by shadowing and volunteering at Phelps Health in Rolla.
Students also benefit from a range of supportive resources, including:
- Personalized advising tailored to their individual goals
- Access to a Canvas course with up-to-date resources and guidance
- Application preparation assistance during their junior year
- A committee letter and interview provided by the Pre-Med Committee to strengthen their applications
“S&T helped me build a strong foundation of knowledge and cultivated a passion for learning that has gotten me to where I am today. The close-knit biology department is very supportive and everyone has a strong passion for learning.”
Adrian Peacock, May 2022 Biological Sciences BS Graduate
Current medical student at the University of Missouri
“When I was an undergrad at S&T, I was not intending to pursue a career in medicine. I graduated and began my career working in the field as an engineer. However, after several years I realized I wanted to make the switch. S&T gave me such a solid foundation that even four years after graduation I was able to hop back into upper level coursework requirements and ace my prerequisites without issue. More importantly though, the connections I made with faculty made me feel comfortable reaching out for letters of recommendation and advice navigating the process. Lastly, the opportunities at leadership through my organizations, and the extensive interviewing I did through the career fair made me feel very prepared going into my medical school interviews.”
Derek Steinbach, 2019 S&T Graduate
Current medical student at the University of Missouri
“Missouri S&T’s science curriculum is excellent, preparing me well for the MCAT and my medical school classes. The undergraduate research I did on campus helped me stand out in the application process as well!”
Parker Boyce, December 2022 S&T Graduate
Current medical student at the University of Missouri – Kansas City
