Your Pre-Med Pathway at S&T
Here is a document prepared by a former Biological Sciences and pre-health student at S&T who is currently a medical student at UMKC
Freshman and Sophomore Years

- Focus on earning a good GPA (>3.5)
- Shadow Physicians in your local community or at Phelps Health in Rolla
- Find your passion by getting involved on campus, choose one or two things to participate in:
- S&T has Intramural Sports teams
- There are more than 200 student organizations – choose one that excites you!
- Fraternities and Sororities provide social and philanthropic activities
- S&T has many Student Design Teams, including biomedical and synthetic biology teams
- S&T provides Volunteer Opportunities
- Become a wellness ambassador through Joe’s PEERS
- Gain research experience by participating in Undergraduate Research with a faculty member and present your results
Junior Year

- Get patient contact experience by doing one or more of the following:
- Volunteer at a nursing home, hospice, or in Phelps Health’s Safe Send Off program
- Earn your Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or EMT license and gain experience
- Become a phlebotomist and learn to draw blood
- Work as a Patient Care Technician
- Gain leadership experience by serving as an officer in your campus and student organization
- Register for PREMED 3010 to get help preparing your application
- Schedule a Committee Interview in the spring for your Committee Letter of Evaluation
- Request individual letters of recommendation
- Register and study for the MCAT
- Participate in the mock MCAT on campus
- Start your AMCAS and/or AACOMAS application in May
Senior Year

- Finish your degree
- Continue extracurricular and clinical activities
- Prepare for medical school interviews
- Graduate
- Prepare to attend medical school or improve your application with a gap year and feedback from the pre-med committee
