Publishing Academy

The Publishing Academy is a three-week series designed to help graduate students better understand the process and practices of academic publishing.

The Academy will begin with a panel discussion from faculty authors who will share their publishing experience and advice for new authors. Presentations in weeks 2 and 3 will help students navigate the complexities of scholarly publishing and writing for publication. Students attending all three sessions will receive a certificate of completion.

The Publishing Academy is sponsored by Graduate Education, University Libraries, and the Writing and Communication Center.

Faculty Author Panel

Faculty from academic departments across Missouri S&T will share their experience with academic publishing, advising beginning authors on evaluating journals, writing manuscripts, and working with editors and peer reviewers. Lunch will be provided.

Understanding Scholarly Publishing

Presenters: Roger Weaver, Associate Dean, University Libraries; Georgette Nicolosi, Research Librarian for Kummer College

This session will explore various resources that assist in identifying suitable journals within your field and evaluating their impact through metrics like impact factors, publication reach, and altmetrics. It will also cover licensing agreements and how to grant rights to publishers while still preserving your rights as an author. Additionally, the session will include a discussion of open access publishing, its economics, and how repositories like Missouri S&T’s Scholars’ Mine facilitate open access. Lunch will be provided.

Writing for Publication

Presenter: Dr. Jossalyn Gale, Director, Writing and Communication Center

This session will examine the nuances of writing for coursework and for publication, including strategies for adapting research papers into articles and conference presentations. Topics to be covered include identifying relevant publication venues, adapting research to fit the scope of a journal, reading and responding to CFPs, understanding author submission guidelines, and revising work based on comments from peer reviewers. Participants are encouraged, but not required, to bring publication-ready research to this workshop. Lunch will be provided.
