Service

My Service Philosophy

Service provides us with the opportunity to apply our unique talents and abilities to improving the greater good. I have been afforded many opportunities to serve as an Associate Teaching  Professor in the English and Technical Communication department at Missouri S&T. When  choosing what projects I can best lend my skills to, I tend to gravitate toward those projects that  allow me to work either with or for students. I enjoy engaging with them outside the classroom  when I wouldn’t be able to do so otherwise. I find I have a great deal I can offer to them in  furthering their academic and professional careers. Perhaps most rewarding is what I take away  from each project; I am able to learn about students as more well-rounded individuals, more than  either a formative or summative assessment can provide, and I am able to apply that knowledge  and insight to improving my classroom instruction.

Research Experience for Undergraduates in Advanced Manufacturing

Jun 2022 – Present
Associated with Missouri University of Science and Technology

The Additive Manufacturing Research Experience for Undergraduates (AM REU) Program is a ten week summer program where undergraduate students from across the country join faculty and graduate students at the Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) to conduct exciting research projects in the area of AM.

Students will engage in exciting research projects with experts in the field of AM in state–of–the–art research facilities. The students will gain the skills necessary to successfully plan, execute, and present a research project. These activities will allow students to test out a career in research to see if it is right for them.

While each student will be responsible for their own research project, students will work in interdisciplinary project teams based on the manufacturing process with the goal of producing functional 3D components by the end of the summer. REU AM students will have ample opportunities to interact with other students and faculty working on AM projects, providing for a cross fertilization of ideas.

A Missouri S&T faculty member and a graduate student will be assigned to each undergraduate student. The faculty mentor will meet with their students each week, and as needed, and the graduate student mentor will be in meet with their students each day. The AM REU Program director Dr. Landers will touch base with the students each week, and as needed.

Students will have ample opportunities to develop their communication skills in a variety of media. This includes biweekly research reports and presentations, as well as a final poster presentation at Missouri S&T and the Solid Freeform Fabrication Symposium, the leading technical conference on additive manufacturing.

The students will participate in weekly extracurricular activities, including field trips to see various manufacturing industries and research laboratories at Missouri S&T.

Through HGR, students build their learning skills, see all that campus life has to offer, learn about university research, get involved in team-building and leadership projects, make new friends, and discover their path to academic success at S&T. My role is to introduce students to the various communication skills they will need to communicate effectively throughout their academic careers.

Intensive Advising

Fall 2021 and Fall 2023
Associated with Missouri University of Science and Technology

During the Fall 2021 semester, The Department of English and Technical Communication launched the “Intensive Advisor” (IA) Program led by Dr. Jossalyn Larson, Associate Teaching Professor of English, and myself, Professor Elizabeth Roberson, Assistant Teaching Professor of Technical Communication. The goal of the program was to identify and, if possible, remove barriers to retention and academic success for students who had received Ds and Fs for their midterm grades in E/TC courses. We reached out to professors via emailed survey and requested feedback regarding each professor’s assessment of individual student challenges. We then contacted, via email, undergraduate students who were in the D/F/W range at midsemester to see how we might assist them in completing the course successfully.

This innovation was recently a featured article within Missouri S&T News and Events. That article can be found here.

I continued a pilot of this program independently during the Fall 2023 semester.

Embedded Tutors

Spring 2022
Associated with Missouri University of Science and Technology

During the Spring 2022 semester, I worked collaboratively with Dr. Jossalyn Larson on a pilot project that embedded tutors in English 1160: Writing and Research. The purpose of these tutors was to assist with student success in the course. That success will be measured in several ways:

  • Retention in the course
  • Attendance
  • Grades

Students enrolled in English 1160 who appeared to be struggling or simply need assistance at one point or another in the semester were directed to the embedded tutor. Those tutors assisted the students on an individual, as needed basis.
