Purpose of the Service
Our self-service sites, powered by CampusPress, are intended for educational and university-related content. They are specifically designed for non-office/non-department entities. While we welcome a broad range of site types, we reserve the right to remove any site for any reason.
Suitable Site Examples
These sites can host a variety of content, including but not limited to:
Faculty:
- Personal websites highlighting professional, academic, and/or teaching activities
- Class sites
- Conference and symposium sites
- Sites about topics of research interest
Staff:
- Department blogs/newsletter sites
- Official event sites
Students:
- Academic portfolios
- Class sites created for assignments
- Student organization sites
- Greek organization sites
- Design team sites
Official university departments may also create supplemental sites on this service, such as department announcements or newsletters. However, their main site must remain within the university’s primary Content Management System.
Inappropriate Site Examples
The following types of sites will be removed:
- Personal general-topic sites/blogs/galleries
- Business sites
- Sites distributing copyrighted material without creator permission
- Sites using photos without appropriate permissions
- Sites impersonating other users, departments, clubs, etc.
- Sites containing inappropriate or discriminatory language, imagery, and media
- Sites violating Missouri S&T’s Computing and Network Acceptable Use Policy
For personal or business websites not directly related to Missouri S&T, consider purchasing a site through wordpress.com, starting as low as $4/month.
Support
Support for sites on this service is offered on a limited basis by the S&T web support. Please report any bugs, service outages, or errors. We typically do not provide design and content support, but exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis for major university initiatives.
Plugins and Themes
Plugins and themes on this service are managed by CampusPress. You can view their changelog or browse a listing of available plugins and themes.
Training
Our service uses WordPress as its Content Management System (CMS), the world’s most popular CMS, powering over a third of the visitable sites online as of 2022.
While CampusPress maintains comprehensive documentation for end-users, we also recommend seeking additional training on WordPress usage in your preferred format. A wealth of WordPress courses is available on platforms like YouTube.
Responsibilities of Site Creators
As a site creator on our CampusPress platform, you have certain responsibilities to uphold the integrity, accessibility, and compliance of your site and its content.
Content Ownership
Your site showcases your academic, professional, or organizational contributions. While you have the freedom to post various forms of content such as text, images, audio, videos, it’s crucial to abide by our Acceptable Use Policy and respect all copyrights, privacy laws, and related regulations. You are solely responsible for the content of your site.
Accessibility Matters
An important part of our university community ethos is inclusivity. We aim to ensure all users, regardless of disabilities or impairments, can access and navigate our sites. As a site creator, it’s your responsibility to keep your site accessible as per the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).
Compliance with Regulations
While building and maintaining your site, remember to align with all legal and university policy guidelines. This covers areas like data protection, intellectual property rights, and other relevant laws or regulations.
Starter Site Updates
We provide basic starter sites as a foundation for your creativity. Keep in mind, though, that if we update these starter sites, the changes will not automatically reflect on your site. If you would like to incorporate a change from a starter site it is your responsibility to incorporate those changes manually.
These guidelines are designed to maintain a respectful and lawful digital environment. We trust you’ll understand the importance of these responsibilities, and we appreciate your commitment to uphold them. Happy creating!
