Beth Kania-Gosche, PhD

Professor and Chair, Department of Education

Biography

Dr. Kania-Gosche (Dr. Beth to her students) has been the chair of Missouri S&T’s department of education since 2019. She teaches EDUC 3216 Instructional Literacy in the Content Area and EDUC 3340 Assessment of Student Learning. Teaching is the best part of her job.

As chair, she established the Bachelor of Science in Education, as well as obtaining state approval for early childhood, middle school language arts, math, science, and social studies. She serves on many campus committees related to her expertise in assessment and curriculum development.

The education department consists of the academic department, the Child Development Center, the South Central Regional Professional Development Center, and the Kummer Center for STEM Education. These centers all work together to improve the quality of education in this region. The Child Development Center opened in January 2022 thanks to a large state grant. Few educators have the opportunity to design and open a school, and Dr. Kania-Gosche considers this center one of her most rewarding professional accomplishments.

Currently, Dr. Kania-Gosche is a member of the Missouri Advisory Council on Certification of Educators, and she recently finished her term as past president of the Missouri Association of Colleges for Teacher Education. She is a fellow for the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, providing data analysis on the statewide teacher pipeline. She regularly collaborates with faculty across campus and the University of Missouri system on grants and other projects.

She has participated in many leadership development programs and was a University of Missouri Presidential Engagement Fellow in 2021.

Dr. Kania-Gosche was previously associate dean at another Missouri institution and taught EdD research courses. She taught high school English teacher in a small Missouri town, and she continues to be passionate about helping rural schools recruit and retain teachers.
